Hi! I'm Nicola Fox

Nicola Fox

I am a mixed-methods criminologist and final-year PhD candidate at the University of Manchester, with a professional background in computer science and over 20 years of experience in the IT industry, including leadership roles in data analysis and programme management, working with stakeholders across disciplines and around the world. My research focuses on missing children, child exploitation, and the use of natural language processing and AI to analyse unstructured, sensitive text data from safeguarding systems in an explainable and sustainable way. I also teach undergraduate students on core quantitative criminology modules, equipping them with practical skills in R and Excel for data analysis in real-world criminological contexts.

My PhD research examines the harm and vulnerabilities associated with children who go missing in England, utilising natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning to facilitate the analysis of larger samples of qualitative data. My studies cover a broad range of topics, including child criminal exploitation, child sexual exploitation, school exclusion, and special educational needs.

My research is driven by a commitment to producing practical, evidence-based insights that support police and partner agencies in safeguarding vulnerable children. My work is published with open access where possible, and I regularly engage with both academic and non-academic audiences to share the findings from my research and broader knowledge in an accessible way. My work has also been cited by key practitioner organisations when engaging with policymakers.

I co-created the Missing Persons Information Hub (MPIH), and I am a member of:
